It feels like I peed myself. Familiar anyone? This is a very common complaint amongst women. Watery discharge that feels like pee comes out of the vagina and makes one wonder if one has peed herself. The vaginal discharge does not usually originate from the vagina. They come from glands located at the entrance of the vagina, and from the cervix.

Numerous conditions can make you feel like you peed yourself due to the volume of watery discharge. The discharge one has may change depending on what time of the menstrual cycle it is. It can also change depending on one’s life cycle, whether you are still an adolescent, a pregnant woman or during menopause.

Healthy discharge usually has mild or no odour. It is either white or colourless and not enough to fill a pad. When a discharge has a foul odour or comes in different colours, it could suggest an infection, and one has to see a doctor immediately.

Hormonal contraceptives also cause watery discharge. This is because the hormones in the contraceptive thicken the cervical fluid. So it is normal for women taking contraceptives to have whitish vaginal discharge throughout the month.

Menopause

Watery discharge can also occur during menopause. The thinning of the vaginal walls called vaginal atrophy can cause watery discharge during menopause.

Now that we have mentioned conditions that could make you have a watery discharge, which is relatively harmless, let us talk about discharges that indicate you need help immediately.

When you have thick discharge with cottage cheese texture this could be a sign of yeast infection. With Yeast infection, you may also have vaginal itching or pain while urinating or during intercourse.

It is usually seen in people who regularly take antibiotics, have a weak immune system, smoke, or have diabetes.

If this is your first encounter with a yeast infection, it is better you see your gynaecologist first to confirm what you have before you start buying over the counter yeast infection creams. This is because there are some sexually transmitted diseases and other vaginal infections that may have similar symptoms.

When you see a yellowish or greenish discharge, it is a sign of infection caused by trichomonas vaginalis. It is sexually transmitted though it can rarely be transmitted through other ways. It is foul-smelling and the smell increases after intercourse.

It is recommended that the woman and her partner are treated when this occurs.

When a grey whitish discharge is seen, it is usually a polymicrobial situation. This means that the balance of the microorganisms in the vaginal flora has changed. The microorganisms have gained more power over the lactobacilli in the vagina. This causes an unpleasant smell of spoiled fish that increases after intercourse or during menstruation. The gynaecologist must be seen immediately.

Brown discharge is usually not a cause for alarm especially if it is after menstruation. This is usually the uterus clearing the remnants of the uterine wall that did not come with the menstrual flow.

However, some conditions could also bring about light or dark brown vaginal discharge. These include fungal infections, vaginal infections, uterine cancer, endometrial polyps and cervical lesions.

However, when our vaginal discharge changes colour and constituency, it is better to see a gynaecologist as soon as possible to get the appropriate treatment. One very important way of avoiding vaginal infections is to avoid douching.

The vagina is an organ that cleans itself. It does not require you to douche in order to make it clean. Douching is washing or cleaning out the inside of the vagina with water or other substances. The normal flora of the vagina should not be interfered with, to have a healthy and clean vagina.
